Why Give?

America's biggest problem isn't cruelty. It's distance. It's easy to dehumanize someone you've never met — an immigrant, an inmate, an officer, an addict. But history proves, over and over, that when the distance disappears, everything changes.

A Black musician named Daryl Davis spent thirty years sitting down with Ku Klux Klan members — not arguing, just listening — and over two hundred of them handed him their robes because once they knew him, they couldn't hate him.

When formerly enslaved people testified before British Parliament in their own voices, decades of failed debate ended and the slave trade was abolished.

When Black students sat at lunch counters, when a thirteen-year-old boy named Ryan White gave the AIDS crisis a face, when the opioid epidemic moved close enough to policymakers that the addict finally had their last name — proximity did what arguments never could. It made the other person real.

The Unlikely Project exists to create that proximity — deliberately, repeatedly, in every city we can reach. We put people in rooms together who would never otherwise meet: over meals, through shared experiences, and in stories told with so much dignity and humanity that anyone who encounters them loses the ability to see a label instead of a person.

A retired officer and a formerly incarcerated father. An immigrant and a college student. Strangers who walk in with assumptions and walk out with names.

This work costs money — real rooms, real food, real facilitators, real storytellers earning trust in real communities. $25 puts a person at a table. $300 funds one story. $500 sponsors an entire dinner. Every amount matters, because every world-changing moment in history started with a single encounter.

We have people like you, and us. People who believe that one dinner can change a mind, one story can change a heart, and one room can start a ripple that doesn't stop.

Fund the next story, or the next room. The people are waiting.

Every dollar closes a distance that should have been closed a long time ago. Every gift puts two people in a room who will walk out seeing the world differently. This is the work.

And it doesn't happen without you.

Fund the next room. The people in it are waiting.
